Food for thought on #FossilFriday: infographic summarising theropod growth rates based on D'Emic et al. 2023. Some theropods raced to giant sizes in just 20 years, but others plodded towards max size over 40-50 years. Interesting implications for ageing #paleoart reconstructions.
A pair of Tetrameryx shuleri seen in the early hours of the morning. Happy #FossilFriday! #paleoart
Practice sketches of various dicynodonts, honestly love these things, but wow, they don't look like anything I usually draw (and that makes then cool:D) #paleoart #sciart #dicynodont #triassic #permian #sketch #synapsid #fossilfriday
For #FossilFriday, here's #paleoart of Bentonyx, a UK rhynchosaur. This piece is doing PR rounds for a new study showing that rhynchosaurs wore out their teeth with age, like elephants. If they lived long enough, they starved to death. Er... Happy Friday! bristol.ac.uk/news/2023/june…
Digging back to 2018 for this week's #FossilFriday #paleoart: my mural of a hyper-busy Jurassic sea for Scarborough's Rotunda Museum. Rhomaelosaurus takes the starring role.
New blog post: a review of "Prehistoric World of Zdeněk Burian, Volume 1". This 4kg(!) book might be the best #paleoart collection ever compiled. Worth every penny of the (admittedly high) cover price, parts 2 & 3 can't arrive fast enough. markwitton-com.blogspot.com/2023/05/book-r… #FossilFriday
Happy #FossilFriday! Please enjoy this Teleoceras aepysoma from the @GrayFossilSite going for a swim! #paleoart
Slightly experimental drawing of Quetzalcoatlus inspired by the manga Yokohama Kaidashi Kikō which I recently read, check it out if you like calmer stories and interesting angles on the end of humanity #paleoart #sciart #FossilFriday
I'm up to my eyes in #paleoart commissions at the moment but can't share any of the results for #FossilFriday. Here's a take on the K/Pg event from 2020 to keep things ticking over. That's not a good place to swim, Prognathodon.
For #FossilFriday: I've never been clear how large the scales of Triceratops were, so took some notes and photos of a touchable skin cast at the Field Museum. Here's the result: big, 8 cm wide tubercle scales surrounded by c. 3-5 cm scales. Should be a useful #paleoart reference.
FINALLY!!! My comic that I've had planned is finally on the way!!! 🦕🦖👀✨ deviantart.com/gogomrdodo/art… #artistsontwitter #dinosaurs #fossilfriday #dinosaur #paleoart #Sciart
Another skeletal reconstruction for #FossilFriday: this is a hypothetical hatchling Tyrannosaurus. It's a little under a metre long and has proportionally long legs and arms. It also has a longer snout than v. young Tarbosaurus, following our youngest juv. T. rex skull material.
Currently enjoying reading @TetZoo Darren Naish's Ancient Marine Reptiles this #FossilFriday. Copies will soon be available in the @DorsetMuseum's shop #Fossils #Pliosaurs #Ichthyosaurs #Plesiosaurs #Mosasaurus #Paleoart #Paleontology #MaryAnning #JurassicCoast #History #Dorset
Not a bull! Not a dinosaur! It’s Shringasaurus! This big horned, long-necked weirdo is actually one of the Allokotosauria family, large herbivorous reptiles that munched through India and Asia in the middle Triassic period. #FossilFriday #paleoart
For #FossilFriday, here's this week's backburner project: a skeletal of Jane the Tyrannosaurus, compared to Sue, the Wife, and the Dog. This is mostly based on a cast of the mounted Jane skeleton, so there may be minor scaling issues.
I'm not a big fan of Cenozoic but can't deny that this Flyorov* #paleoart from @darwinmuseum sure looks impressive. *the artist may be Vatagin, I'm not 100% sure. #FossilFriday
For #FossilFriday , #Therizinosaurus showing off it’s claws for display! . #dinosaur #cretaceous #paleoart #paleontology #ArtistOnTwitter
For #FossilFriday, here's #paleoart of Rhamphorhynchus creating Rhamphichnus, simultaneously also creating a sentence with far too many "h"'s. It would be neat to explore more non-pterodactyloid terrestrial locomotion in art, but time is never on my side.
Chilesaurus diegosuarezi Scale A strange herbivorous theropod from the Upper Jurassic of Chile (150 Mya). Render in #keyshot Our share for this #fossilfriday #chilesaurus #dinosaur #3d #zbrush #chile #paleoart #education #paleontology #cience #diegosuarezi #theropod #jurassic
