Not a bull! Not a dinosaur! It’s Shringasaurus! This big horned, long-necked weirdo is actually one of the Allokotosauria family, large herbivorous reptiles that munched through India and Asia in the middle Triassic period. #FossilFriday #paleoart
New to the internet #paleoart for #FossilFriday, from 2019: the tanystropheid Dinocephalosaurus hunts for small fish by uprooting algae. There are things I'd change about this now but this is a "lost" painting - the original Photoshop file is missing. It is what it is.
New (to the internet) #paleoart for #FossilFriday. Here's the hypothetical concestor (=common ancestor) of Haliaeetus, the sea eagle genus, that I painted back in 2019 for a now aborted book project. This would be a Miocene or Oligocene scene, depending on how old the genus is.
This #FossilFriday, Vegasaurus rises from the dark depths of the working week towards the light of the weekend. The heteromorph ammonites continue working, of course, because they're freelancers and thus have no knowledge of time or work-life balance. #paleoart
Don't celebrate #FossilFriday too loud: you'll startle this tiny, tiny baby Scleromochlus. (#Paleoart from 2019)
It's #FossilFriday, so here's some new #paleoart AND a new blog post: Tyrannosaurus wrecks Triceratops: my interpretation of @df9465 and colleagues' 2012 abstract on Triceratops carcass consumption. The Mesozoic was pretty metal, folks. markwitton-com.blogspot.com/2022/09/tyrann…
I've spent much of this week writing about mighty morphin' Spinosaurus so here, for #FossilFriday, are all my #paleoart pieces of this animal from the last decade. In order, these are 2014 (pre-Ibrahim et al.), 2016, 2020 and 2022.
#Paleoart from 2017 for #FossilFriday: the giant placoderm Titanichthys filters through Devonian seas. This image is featured in my old school "tour-through-time" 2020 book Life Through the Ages II. I had a blast putting LTTAII together, I hope to something like it again someday.
New #paleoart to the (public) internet for #FossilFriday: from 2018, the entirety of my rising Shonisaurus popularis scene. The idea is that these animals are hunting cooperatively and corraling squid, hence the leftmost animal swallowing down a tentacley meal.
I can't remember if I've released this online or not yet but, anyway, here's the full extent of my Pervushovisaurus vs. juvenile Cimoliopterus #paleoart piece for #FossilFriday. This dates back to 2020, so the juvenile pterosaur gauntlet isn't #PrehistoricPlanet inspired.
Super stoked about fortuitously seeing #PrehistoricPlanet this evening, so here's a Maastrichtian-themed #FossilFriday #paleoart post: Quetzalcoatlus, Tyrannosaurus, Triceratops and Vegasaurus.
Some new pseudo-#paleoart for #FossilFriday: my take on the most famous part of Ray Bradbury's 1852 short story "A Sound of Thunder". Watch out for those butterflies, folks.
My afternoon is all about creating sauropod #paleoart, so in honour of that, here's a suite of sauropodomorphoramas featuring classic taxa for #FossilFriday: Brontosaurus, Giraffatitan, Plateosaurus, and Diplodocus.
For #FossilFriday, meet a ~305 million-year-old spider, Protolycosa suazoi! this gorgeous creature was discovered at a Brick Quarry in Bernalillo, New Mexico. We can be confident of the fact that this is a true spider, as its preserved bits include appendages for spinning silk.
NEW #PALEOART: The huge ceratopsian dinosaur Titanoceratops ouranos foraging in the swampy jungles of what is now New Mexico, some 75 million years ago. #FossilFriday
Another busy #FossilFriday: here's a driveby #paleoart post of chirping Archaeopteryx climbing over driftwood to keep things ticking over.
So, these are the three pieces I did for the Tyrannosauroid series by Beast of the Mesozoic: Daspletosaurus, Proceratosaurus and Lythronax #paleoart #sciart #FossilFriday
Allosaurus is angry! WIP (early stages). There is a good reason why this Allosaurus has its mouth wide open, don’t worry. #paleoart #SciArt #FossilFriday
Mantling Velociraptor with Protoceratops prey for #FossilFriday. I drew this for a #paleoart display I was producing for the Portsmouth ComicCon last year. Obviously, that never happened, but hopefully it will, someday...
