R. cancellatum is easily the coolest Hallucigeniid, no contest. The spines are all that is known from it, but it lived far and wide around the same time interval as the Chengjiang biota. #Paleoart #Paleontology #SciArt
Kerygmachela kierkegaardi, a small, gilled lobopod, found living just above the great depths of the Cambrian sea in Sirius Passet. It had large compound eyes on the underside of its appendages, and short legs beneath each flap. #Paleoart #Paleontology #SciArt
Collinsovermis monstruosus, the recently described, long known-about namesake of the “Collins Monsters”, now the Teratopodids. A stout lobopodian tank covered in spines, it lived in the Burgess Shale. I think... I feel like it’s looking at me?? #Paleoart #Paleontology #SciArt
The strange Burgess Shale arthropod, Fibulacaris nereidis, has an encounter of the first kind with the Mothership, the largest known Cambrian hurdiid. Have a good #FossilFriday. #Paleoart #SciArt #Paleontology
Ramskoeldia sp., a fat-bodied, predatory Radiodont from the Chengjiang biota of south China. We aren’t sure which Radiodont it is, but it might be similar to Ramskoeldia (an animal which doesn’t have fossils that clearly show the body). #Paleoart #Paleontology #SciArt
Okay, okay. #AnimalArtistsUnit, I’m caving in. I draw a lot of very dead sea bugs and pterosaurs / dinosaurs and stuff. #Paleoart
Akmonistion zangerli, a stethacanthid Shark from the late Devonian period, recognized by a very large spine-brush complex on its dorsal fin, a feature involved in reproduction. Happy Shark Week, it’s been nice. #Paleoart #Paleontology #SciArt #SharkWeek #SharkWeek2020
“Ghost III” Orthacanthus. Hope some of you recognize this shot. Testing out different stuff a little bit. Happy #SharkWeek from when Discovery’s Shark Week was still amazing. #Paleoart #Paleontology #SciArt #SharkWeek2020
The Essex Biota of the Mazon Creek Lagerstätten, during the Carboniferous period. Tullimonstrum gregarium, better known as the Tully Monster, preys upon the marine lobopodian Carbotubulus waloszeki, a close relative of Hallucigenia. #Paleoart #Paleontology #SciArt
Dilophosaurus wetherilli, a very large theropod from the early Jurassic. They may have had large, variable casques covering their twin crests, like some modern birds. I’m a bit late to the whole Dilophosaurus hype, oops. #Paleoart #Paleontology #SciArt
An ugly, mean, and familiar face. Quick Protoceratops based on an older work of mine. #Paleoart #Paleontology #SciArt
A pair of Tyrannosaurus rex on a little “dinner date” late in the evening as part of courtship, in the late Cretaceous Hell Creek formation. Basal birds take off in the background. #Paleoart #SciArt #Paleontology
Happy #FossilFriday everyone, today we bring offerings of huge cephalopods! Check out Tyler’s blog post about reconstructing the giant Enchoteuthis (AKA “Tusoteuthis”), for which I supplied some art. #Paleoart #Paleontology #SciArt
Four drawings and some artist recommendations. @jimmadseni @dhruvfranklin @Midiaou7 @AshleyPalaeo @ni075 @IV757975026 @alukslice @VilleSinkkonen @TheBioBob @SerpenIllus @batavotyrannus @AttwellLucas @Just9Art @TheWoodParable @JuliotheArtist #Paleoart #Paleontology #SciArt
We start streaming in about 2 hours, at 2 PM (EST). Today we’ll start drawing a giant extinct cephalopod some of you may recognize. twitch.tv/prehistoricaart #Paleoart #Paleontology #SciArt (Picture unrelated, just a little Pambdelurion whittingtoni resource if anyone needs it.)
Alright, we’re gonna stream again after I get back from work tomorrow, around 6/7 PM (EST). We gotta finish off this Aegirocassis. See some of you tomorrow, hopefully. I eventually managed to make some good looking water, no worries. #Paleoart #Paleontology
A Velociraptor mongoliensis portrait, inspired by @YDAWtheShow’s recent video. I don’t think I’ve actually drawn Velociraptor in several years... #Paleoart #Paleontology #SciArt
The size and diversity of the Radiodonts I hope I didn’t mess it up too badly. Xenusiids, Gilled Lobopodians, et cetera will come later. Some of these sizes (Amplectobelua symbrachiata and Ramskoeldia platyacantha) are based on unpublished specimens. #Paleoart #Paleontology
#PaleoartProcess for the Opabinia. First step was research, looking over tons of fossils of Opabinia, mostly the eyes. Then, I sketched it out, trying to find a good pose to display the features I wanted to portray. Then, over the course of about 8 hours, painting it. #Paleoart
2700 people, hello! Here’s a new piece; Aerotitan sudamericanus, a medium-sized Azhdarchid pterosaur from South America. Wanted to try out different stuff with this one. The pterosaur is drawn only with a low opacity “pencil” brush. #Paleoart #Paleontology #SciArt
