This is my #illustration of the #PoplarHawkMoth #Laothoepopuli,a gorgeous #hawkmoth who often holds its' wings in this distinctive position. The first one I saw was on a bioblitz with @meganshersby, and I've been amazed by their muted beauty ever since. #InsectWeek #InsectWeek23
This is my #botanicalillustration of the #Portlandspurge #Euphorbia portlandica. The structure of euphorbia is complicated, with cyathium and those beautifully stacked leaves. This is one of a series of #sanddune #wildflowers #illustrations completed for @FSCPublications
Did you know #rhododendron is poison for bees? That #hardsurfaces in #gardens are really bad for nature & the environment? This week's blog is all about how to avoid making #gardening mistakes that have a negative ecological impact: lizzieharper.co.uk/2023/02/the-ba… (#illustrations by me)
This is my #naturalhistory #illustration of the #Collareddove #Streptopelia in flight. Its part of a larger illustration showing its pair perched in a copper beech tree. #wildlifeartist
#Sketchbook #botanicalillustration study sheet of the #Snowberry #Symphoricarpusalbus. Luckily some is still out (and in flower!) despite the season. The second picture shows how I start #illustrating leaves, plotting in the tonal and vein details. Commission for FOR Sweden.
Just finished this #illustraiton of the #Garden #bumblebee #Bombushortorum. A treat to work on insect in amongst all the #botanicalillustration commissions. Such a fab bee, one online source called it "a rather scruffy-looking long-haired species". Rude.
#SciArtSeptember Day 27: #Adeversary. Malaria, is one of the most lethal diseases for humans, so the humble #mosquito, questing for a blood meal so she can reproduce,is a formidable adversary. This #illustration mosquito mouthparts was done for "30 animals that made us smarter"
#SciArtSeptember Day 26: #Branching. Its a little predictable, but here's a pen and ink tree #illustration with colour top wash, done years ago for a book on #bonsai by @DKcol. One of a series of illustrations. And drawing the branching on this particular tree was a lot of fun.
#SciartSeptember Day 19: #winged. So here we have a #WhitewingedDuck #Asarcornisscutata emerging from bamboo. I did this ages ago for @WWTLondon but still have a lot of affection for the #illustration (the composition is something I like) & the duck itself, a very pretty species.
#SciartSeptember Day 16: #Scaled. This #penandink #illustration was done for "30 Animals that made us Smarter" by @PatrickAryee and shows the #Scaly #pangolin #Manis javanica alongside #Waterloo train station - the animal having inspired the architecture and form of the roof.
Really pleased to feature in a blog on #zoologicalillustration by @Medillustrates, alongside other #naturalscience #illustrators blog.medillsb.com/special-featur…

Speeded up film of me adding colour to a #penandink #naturalhistoryillustration of a #hedgehog with a woodpile. youtu.be/juic5XCbjLE This #illustration was done for Antonelli's "The Hidden Universe" by @EburyPublishing, which came out on July 12th
Just finished this #Shorteared #owl #Asioflammeus in #heather #illustration. Oddly, the owl took much less time than all the heather! These owls hunt in the day; a threat to small mammals, especially voles. They can be seen in wetlands, coastal marsh, heath, & northern areas
This week's blog is all about #geraniums #storskbill #cranesbill and how to tell these uk wild (& pot plant) species apart: lizzieharper.co.uk/2022/05/gerani… Guest blog by Stewart Roberts #botanicalillustrations #illustration #botanicalart
New film out youtu.be/OljJzsOCq_g, of me doing a #botanicalillustration of the False Oat #grass #Arrhenatherumelatius in real time & explaining my work...& dealing with the problems of the plant not being in flower right now. Part of a larger sheet of #grasses #illustrations
Well, #illustrator seems to be trending, so I'd better post some of my recent #botanicalillustrations... These ones are for an upcoming identification chart of #wildflowers for @FSCPublications. These are #bogasphodel #heathmilkwort #hawkbit & #catsear
Blog this week's a bit different - about my great aunts fascinating 1920s #historical #naturenotebook, how a love of art passes through the generations, & how vital it is to encourage all to create art: lizzieharper.co.uk/2022/01/nature… #illustration #botanicalillustration #mushroom #iris
This is the #Waterprimrose #Ludwigia grandiflora, Ive not seen it growing wild so it's one of those challenges when you need to construct an #illustration from photos, online images, & written descriptions; & include water plus the correct growth habit. #botanicalillustration
These details are from an #illustration done as a postage stamp presentation pack for @JerseyStamps some years ago. The insect featured is the #Bandeddemoiselle, #Calopteryxsplendens Males hang out by stream and riverside vegetation, flicking wings & flying 2 attract females

Here is my #illustration of the #Roach, #Rutilusrutilus. Its a common uk #freshwaterfish and according to @CanalRiverTrust is the commonest #fish in Britain's canals. I love it for its reddish fins. #naturalhistoryillustration
