Inktober Day 31 Bakekujira The ghost whale yokai. A floating flying whale skeleton accompanied by ghostly sea birds. To see this creature is to bring disaster, misfortune, and famine upon yourself and your village. This is the curse of the bakekujira. #inktober #japaneseculture
Inktober Day 27/31 Katawaguruma This is the female equivalent of the Wanyudo (flaming monk head). A hellish spirit that would fly about the countryside and bring disaster to any who looked upon it; dragging people away to hell. #inktober2020 #japanesemythology
Inktober Day 18/31 Tengu A birdlike humanoid yokai who are mountain ascetics originally associated with evil forces that hindered people from reaching enlightenment. Tengu's were known for spiriting away children & people to their realm. #inktober #yokaitober
Inktober Day 17/31 Haunted Masks Round 2 Another batch of haunted mask yokai to populate our Night Parade of 100 Demons. The first is a bugaku mask, an ancient military-style dance from the Japanese imperial court. The second is from noh theater. #inktober #yokaitober
