Inktober Day 31 Bakekujira The ghost whale yokai. A floating flying whale skeleton accompanied by ghostly sea birds. To see this creature is to bring disaster, misfortune, and famine upon yourself and your village. This is the curse of the bakekujira. #inktober #japaneseculture

Inktober Day 30 Shachihoko A sea monster yokai with a tiger-like head and the body of a carp. These creatures are often found atop shrine, temple, and castle rooftops because they had the mystical power to cause rain to fall so they were placed as a guard against fire. #inktober

Inktober 28 Ubagabi A fireball type of yokai of which there are many. This one in particular is of the spirit of an old woman who stole oil from a shrine and was cursed. If it touches you it is said you will die within 3years. #inktober #yokai

Inktober Day 27/31 Katawaguruma This is the female equivalent of the Wanyudo (flaming monk head). A hellish spirit that would fly about the countryside and bring disaster to any who looked upon it; dragging people away to hell. #inktober2020 #japanesemythology

Inktober Day 26 In the 10 century many monks ritually burned themselves to death in order to attain enlightenment. However, some of these monks had too many attachments to this world. The souls of these monks arose as these fiery apparitions, the kazenbo. #inktober #yokai

Inktober Day 25/31 Kamaitachi Riding atop our oxcart we find the wind-sickle yokai. The embodiment of biting winds these creatures usually roam in groups of 3 and attack people with their sickle-like hands by invisibly riding the winds and cutting people down. #yokai #inktober

Inktober Day 24/31⁠ Riding in our Oboroguruma we have the deadly Kejoro. From behind she looks like a normal person, but once turned around her face and body are covered by her long thick hair which she uses to ensnare and cut up her victims.⁠ #horror #inktober

Inktober Day 23 Oboroguruma The squeaky oxcart yokai. Some say it could be a haunted oxcart embodying the resentment of all the people who lost their lives in cart accidents. In modern depiction they are often used by other yokai for transportation. #inktober #yokai

Inktober Day 22 Hashihime was originally a guardian deity protecting the bridge they occupied. Over time the mythology changed and she became a powerful jealous oni arisen from a woman scorned by her lover, who transformed into an oni in order to exact revenge. #yokai #inktober

Inktober Day 21 Kamikiri This infamous hair-cuting yokai stalks behind the Ouni in our Night Parade. Back in the Edo period when long hair and top knots where status symbols this yokai would go around and cut off peoples' hair with its pincer-like hands. #inktober #yokai

Inktober Day 20 Ouni A mountain dwelling yokai covered in long hair. Not much is known about this yokai, but it was featured in the 'Gazu Hyakki Yagyo' by Toriyama Sekien 1776 This yokai is part of a month long collaboration art piece by @katgbirmelin and myself. #inktober #japan
