While many think of North America or Australia when they think of megafaunal extinction, Africa too had its losses. In particular, Southern Africa lost quite a few distinct ungulates at the end of the Pleistocene, which I've illustrated below. Scale bar is 1 m.

Procoptodon goliah. At 8' 10" or 2.7m, this was (possibly) the largest kangaroo to ever roam our planet. They evolved such heights to reach leafy browse. One can only wonder what the first people to reach Australia must have felt seeing such giants.

One of my painting finals from this semester. Like my oil painting from last year, this one also features a jaguar in a North American setting. Here, however, this jaguar, likely a lone male in search of new territory, wanders a Northeastern woodland during fall.

This is a 25"x35" oil painting I did for finals. It depicts a jaguar haven taken down a bull elk somewhere in Colorado during the 1700s. While today, the word jaguar conjures up visions of marshy South American jungles, the jaguar's range once extended much further North.

Nebraska, 15 mya. The silence of a misty morning is broken by the sound of tapping on wood. A bachelor herd of Moropus, intrigued by the sound, investigate the source: a small bird. It's likely around this time that some woodpeckers first evolved their unique drilling behavior.
