#Styxosaurus was an aquatic, long-necked plesiosaur native to North America ~82mya. This reptile swam the Western Interior Seaway, far away from most dinosaurs. It seems to have preferred a fishy diet suitable to its relatively small head. #PaleoArt by ABelov2014 on DeviantArt
"The Narrow Clawed Lizard": #Stenonychosaurus was a small predatory dino from Western North America. This troodontid lived roughly 76mya where it likely filled an ecological role similar to modern coyotes - hunting small prey & scavenging. Beautiful #Paleoart by @kta92751434
#Perijasaurus was a mid-sized sauropod from the La Quinta Formation of #Colombia ~175mya. It holds the distinction of being the most equatorial early sauropod yet known. Despite being discovered in the 1950s, its naming occurred just this year. (#Paleoart by @AdamWorks4)
#Shaochilong of China was one of the last survivors of its lineage - the Carcharodontosaurids. These predators dominated the southern continents during the early/mid Cretaceous. However, the fossil record of this family evaporates at ~90mya. #PaleoArt: Caio Negri on ArtStation
One of the original #PaleoArt depictions of #Megalosaurus (and dinosaurs in general) are the world famous #CrystalPalace dino sculptures built in the 1850s. It would take another ~20 years before the assumed quadrupedal stance of carnivorous dinosaurs fell out of favor.
#Austroposeidon was a titanic sauropod from #Brazil during the late Cretaceous. Named after the Greek God who controlled the seas and earthquakes, this 25 meter long animal thundered around the forests and floodplains of South America. (#PaleoArt by @opaleoartista)
#Buitreraptor was a 1.5 meter long lightweight theropod dinosaur from roughly 98mya in #Argentina. Its slender snout indicates a relatively weak bite-force, but would have given it an advantage in capturing small prey. (#Paleoart by @weird_dog_thing)
This week's Dino Fact theme will be #Pachycephalosaurus! The largest member of its family of dinosaurs, it lived at the end-most Cretaceous period in North America. Join us this week as we discuss its weird anatomy, environment, and ontogeny. (#PaleoArt: Michiragi on DA)
#Philovenator ("The Lover of the Hunt") was a sickle-clawed troodontid that lived ~73 million years ago in China. This dinosaur was small, slender, and built for quickness - very capable of pursuing small prey like mammals & lizards. (#PaleoArt by @EloyManzanero)
Welcome to #Cryolophosaurus week! The "Frozen Crested Lizard" was one of the largest predators at the time & is currently one of the only dinosaurs known from #Antarctica. This week's posts will be all about this crested carnivore. (#PaleoArt by @Cynderen)
#Chasmosaurus was named after the large openings (or chasms) in its frill. The openings take up a substantial portion of the frill, reducing the weight of the skull as a whole. It likely would have made for a fantastic display structure! (#PaleoArt credit to @AdriArt95)
A North African giant, #Atlasaurus was a 15 meter long, tree-top grazing sauropod that lived ~165mya. Its posture was similar to that of the more famous Brachiosaurus which lived about 10 million years later. #paleontology (#PaleoArt by Levi Bernardo)
The ~16 meter long Diamantinasaurus is one of the largest #dinosaurs known from #Australia. Classified as either a basal titanosaur or a close relative to the Saltasaurids, this long-neck lived about 95mya. (#PaleoArt Credit to Travis Tischler)
An early Jurassic sauropodomorph, #Massospondylus was native to Southern Africa ~ 190 million years ago. It was one of the first dinosaurs described (1850s) and is the namesake of an entire family of mid-sized, bipedal "pro-sauropod" dinosaurs. #PaleoArt by @maxmarinart
#Dracopelta ("The Shielded Dragon") is another of the coolest dinosaur names out there. It was an armoured dinosaur native to #Portugal in the late Jurassic & would have been one of the earliest "large" ankylosaurians at 3-4 meters long. #Paleoart by @martinhfilipe
#Tlatolophus was a crested hadrosaur from #Mexico during the Late Cretaceous. Known from a nearly complete skull and various other bits, it is one of many recent dinosaurs discovered in the current "golden age" of dino research in southern North America. #PaleoArt by @ArtXaime
#Suskityrannus (The Coyote Tyrant) likely filled a similar ecological role to its namesake. Roughly the same size as a large dog, this dino would have hunted small prey and was native to the Southwestern US ~ 90mya. #TyrannosaurTuesday #PaleoArt by @Tomozaurus
Happy #Twosday from the "Two Crested Lizard" - #Dilophosaurus! It lived across the #USA about 190 million years ago and is known from #Arizona & #Connecticut. At 7m/23ft long, it was much larger than shown in #JurassicPark. #PaleoArt by @dinodanicus
#Saurolophus was an odd example of a crested, non-lambeosaurine hadrosaur. Its crest is a solid, non-chambered extension of the nasal bone. Reaching up to ~13 meters (~42 ft) in total length, this was one of the largest duckbilled #dinosaurs. (#PaleoArt by @jedkimball)
#Saurolophus has been discovered in the Horseshoe Canyon (#Canada) and Nemegt (#Mongolia) Fossil Formations dating to ~70my old. This animal provides strong evidence that #dinosaurs were able to actively move between Asia and NA around this time. (#PaleoArt by @rexorasaurus)
