Dear pterosaur people: What is this ligament and where is it attaching to in the torso? I thought the ligament from the pteroid was supposed to connect to the deltopectoral crest, but here that's a totally different ligament, so guess not? #pterosaurs #anatomy #paleoart
It's time for another #WIPwednesday, and this time you get to decide which one I pick back up and finish for the wiki? Poll in the reply (because you can't have polls and images in the same post for some reason). #wikipedia #paleoart
#Portfolioday strikes again! Hello, I am a Finnish paleoartist, speculative zoology artist, illustrator, creature designer, what have you. Odd and extinct animals, creatures and monsters are my speciality. instagram.com/metteaumala osmatar.deviantart.com
Last year was a weird sequence of dry spells followed by bursts of activity, with lots of big projects left unfinished, which this monthly breakup doesn't really reflect very well, but it is what it is. #ArtSummary2021
I know this isn't Dinovember material, but I felt the need to add some color before I send my Bothriodon out into the world. #paleoart #anthracotheriidae
Joinging the #flockofartists bandwagon because I've also drawn four things that qualify as birds. Probably. I assume.
I was so bummed about the 'Ebenezer' specimen being trapped in pseudoscience hell that to forget that I finished the sculpt of my Allosaurus with inflatable air sacs in the lacrimal horns. It's a bit out there but not sauropod trunk out at least. #paleoart #FreeEbenezer
I finally put together a month-by-month retrospective of my 2D art from the last year. Considering how much I had to leave out, I guess I have been reasonably busy. I just hope I can keep this up in 2021. #paleoart #sciart #speculativezoology #speculativebiology
At last #DrawDinovember gets to tackle a whole new taxon, the weirdo birdo Falcatakely forsterae. An animal so strange we don't know if it's a bird or a noasaur. I went with a speculation that it had additional premaxillary teeth and no rhamphotheca at the tip. #Sciart #Paleoart
#Smaugust final concept: parasite. The Ear Wyrm has a unique parenting strategy. It lays its eggs inside the ear canals of large animals, where the tiny hatchling latches on a surface vein and remains attached feeding on blood until it is able to fly. #Smaugust2020
#Smaugust ecological concepts: giant high-browser. The Lunggurmr is the largest terrestrial dragon. It gave up flight long ago and its wings have turned into columnar limbs to support its immense frame. This freed its forelimbs to function as tools and weapons. #Smaugust2020
#Smaugust concept clearup: marine filter-feeder. The Draketos is the largest know dragon with the ability to launch itself into the air. Usually these marine giants glide through the water after zooplankton using their wings modified into giant fins. #Smaugtober2020
I gave up on the prompt list, but not on #Smaugust! This here is a cursorial biped known as the Cockerel Wyvern. A hunter of small prey on the savanna it resembles seriemas and secretary birds. While still able to fly, it rarely does, rather relying on its feet. #Smaugust2020
Since I can't art right now, I thought it might be a good time for #faceyourart (even though some would argue that animal heads aren't the same thing as faces...)
#Smaugust day 9: Ice The Glaciamuth is one of the heaviest terrestrial dragons largely due to its lineage having given up flight entirely. These apex predators of the north are almost as much at home in the frigid arctic waters just as they are on the ice. #Smaugust2020
#Smaugust catchup Flower dragons, also known as petal dragons, are very small insectivores that mimic large flowers to fool prey and predator alike. Flower dragons mainly feed on pollinating insects and their skin also contains UV patterns to draw them in. #Smaugust2020
