#ArtvsArtist2022 I spent a lot of my year in art developing a graphic style for fish on the tablet. Pretty nice to look back and see the improvement! Plus, now that I'm #PhDone, I'm looking forward to even more art (fish and otherwise) in 2023!
First up, we have Hiodontidae, the mooneyes. These are moderately-sized silvery fishes that are relatives to the bonytongues. They have teeth on their tongue and their primary bite is between the tongue and the roof of their mouth! #Inktober2020 #Inktober2020fish
Opah can use their swim muscles to heat up their blood, warm their heart, and improve swimming performance. I'm assuming having a warm heart also means they are very polite. #SundayFishSketch #Inktober2019
#InktoberDay23: ancient. A great excuse to make some #PaleoArt. Somehow I made a dunkleosteus, apex predator from the Devonian, look kinda friendly? #Inktober2019 #SciArt #SciArtInk
#inktoberday21: treasure. Bromeliads provide nursery habitat to everything from insects to amphibians in the rainforest, and if a plant full of tadpoles and nymphs isn't a treasure, I don't know what is. #Inktober2019 #SciArt
I just went for the obvious baseball pun and made a mascot for the red-lipped batfish. Plus batfish use their pelvic fins as feet, so it's pretty anatomically accurate! Go Batfish! #SundayFishSketch #inktober2019 #SciArt
#inktoberday17: ornamental. Arowana are mouthbrooders, meaning the males will protect young fish in their mouths until they're large enough to survive on their own! #Inktober2019 #SciArt
#inktoberday16: wild. Literally everything I draw fits this theme, so here's just a nice tiger salamander, the only salamander you can find throughout most of North Dakota. #Inktober2019 #Inktober #SciArt #SciArtInk
#Inktoberday14: overgrown. Phragmites and cattails are nuisance plant species in a lot of prairie potholes. Jury's out on whether or not they degrade amphibian habitat, but they sure make my job harder. #Inktober #SciArt #FieldWork
#inktoberday12: dragon. The komodo dragon genome was sequenced this year, so I imagine it's only a matter of time before dragons can mail researchers toxic saliva samples to get ancestry reports for $69.99. #Inktober2019 #SciArt #Genomics
#Inktoberday11 - snow. Extremely appropriate theme for Fargo today. However, I wanted to focus on marine snow and drew two hagfish building a snowfish. Will it be brought to life by a magical piece of discarded plastic? Will they go on a whimsical ocean adventure? #inktober2019
#inktoberday10: pattern. Today I drew the three pattern morphs of the northern leopard frog found in MN, ND, & SD: the wild type with spots (your typical leopard frog), the burnsi morph without spots, and the kandiyohi morph with verniculation inbetween spots. #Sciart #inktober
#Inktoberday8: frail. Leptocephalus were originally classified as their own species, but it was later discovered that they are the larval form of the true eels and related fish families. #SciArt #Inktober2019
#Inktoberday4: frozen. Wood frogs produce antifreeze in their tissues allowing them to be one of the few amphibians you can find above the arctic circle. Some Alaskan and Canadian wood frogs can be frozen for 100+ days a year with minimal tissue damage! #inktober2019 #sciart
#inktoberday3 is a friendly reminder not to move around bait fish! Incidental introduction as bait is one of the primary ways invasive species can spread and disrupt native communities. #Inktober2019 #SciArt
For day 2 of #inktober, I drew an ant with a cordyceps fungus stalk growing out of its head. This fungus alters the behavior of the ants so they'll move to higher areas over places where more ants can be infected. #inktober2019 #SciArt
