#Inktober#FAHM Edition, 31/31: Jollibee We made it! My final Inktober entry is: Jollibee! This is its mascot. Jollibee is a Filipino chain of fast food restaurants with American-influenced items, as well as casual Filipino fare.
#Inktober#FAHM Edition, 30/31: Bahay Kubo This one is for my wife: Bahay Kubo roughly translates to “country house.” It’s a square shaped house with no divisions, just a door and windows. It’s built using local materials such as wood, bamboo, and nipa grass.
#Inktober#FAHM Edition, 29/31: Sari-Sari Store The humble sari-sari store is a convenience shop that carries basic goods. They’re found in the Philippines and they cater to the members of the community. The word “sari-sari” is Tagalog meaning "variety" or "sundry.”
#Inktober#FAHM Edition, 28/31: Pandesal Pandesal is a classic Filipino bread roll and is probably the most popular bread in the Philippines. It can be eaten on its own, with coffee, or made into a sandwich (hello, corned beef pandesal sandwich!).
#Inktober#FAHM Edition, 27/31: Sarsi Sarsi is sarsaparilla soda in a can. It’s a local soda brand under Coca-Cola Beverages Philippines, Inc. As with the majority of my FAHM posts, this particular brand just lives on in my earliest memories.
#Inktober#FAHM Edition, 26/31: Ube Ube is everywhere now! Pronounced as “ooo-bae,” it’s a purple yam. Its flavor is similar to red yams & sweet potatoes. It lends itself well to several kinds of baked goods & desserts. Ube ice cream…don’t get me started how delicious that is!
#Inktober#FAHM Edition, 25/31: Kamayan This means, “eating with the hands” in Tagalog. It’s also a Filipino communal feast where where rice and various colorful dishes are placed on banana leaves and eaten without utensils.
#Inktober#FAHM Edition, 24/31: Chicharon Chicharon is basically deep-fried pork rinds. They are finger-food snacks that are crunchy, tasty, and best with spicy vinegar dip. They are popular around the world that has Spanish influence.
#Inktober#FAHM Edition, 23/31: Tinikling This is a traditional Philippine folk dance. It involves 1 or more dancers between 2 bamboo poles while these clap in a certain rhythm against each other. I did it when I was younger & also did it at my wedding with my wife.
#Inktober#FAHM Edition, 22/31: Jeepney The jeepney, along with the tricycle, are an iconic mode of transportation in the Philippines. They are known for their crowded seating and kitsch decorations, which have become a widespread symbol of Philippine culture and art.
#Inktober#FAHM Edition, 21/31: Tricycle Tricycles are an iconic vehicle as a mode of transportation in the Philippines that are built in a variety of styles. It consists of a motorcycle attached to a passenger cab. It’s one of the most common means of transportation.
#Inktober#FAHM Edition, 20/31: Balikbayan Box These are large cardboard boxes filled with all sorts of items goods for family and friends back in the Philippines. I have fond memories of my Lolo and Lola filling LBC boxes up to the brim with gifts and items for send off.
#Inktober#FAHM Edition, 19/31: Tabo A tabo is the traditional hygiene tool primarily for cleansing, bathing, and cleaning the floor of the bathroom in the Philippines and other countries.
#Inktober#FAHM Edition, 18/31: Choc Nut This is a small candy bar from the Philippines. Choc Nut include peanuts, sugar, milk powder, cocoa powder, & vanilla that forms a powdery bar that crumbles easily. It melts in your mouth and is really tasty!
#Inktober#FAHM Edition, 17/31: Halo-Halo Halo-halo means “mix-mix" in Tagalog and it’s a refreshing cold dessert with layers of shaved ice and condensed milk on top of all sorts of ingredients. I absolutely love this dessert and it’s one of my all-time favorites.
#Inktober#FAHM Edition, 16/31: Preferred Occupations This is a touchy one! There's a stereotype that most Filipinos are nurses &/or doctors. There is a generation of Filipinos whose parents wanted their kids to be nurses, doctors, engineers, & others when they grew up.
#Inktober#FAHM Edition, 15/31: Lechon Lechon, derived from a Spanish word for “roasted suckling pig” is one of the most popular dishes in the Philippines. It’s traditionally served whole on a platter, at celebrations and festive events.
#Inktober#FAHM Edition, 14/31: Karaoke Karaoke is a huge part of Filipino culture. If you ever go to a Filipino party, chances are high that someone is singing karaoke.
#Inktober#FAHM Edition, 13/31: Removing Shoes It’s customary to remove one’s shoes before entering a home. It’s common practice not only with Filipinos, but with many Asian countries as well.
#Inktober#FAHM Edition, 12/31: Balut BALUUUUUUUUT!!! Balut is a popularly known Filipino delicacy made from incubated duck eggs. It’s not for me, but many love this street food!
#Inktober#FAHM Edition, 11/31: Boiled Peanuts (Nilagang Mani) Boiled peanuts are a very popular street food and snack in the Philippines. If you ever wonder where the boiled peanuts are at a Filipino party, look for the “uncle table.” You’ll find them there.
#Inktober#FAHM Edition, 10/31: San Miguel San Miguel is a Filipino pale lager. This one I had to do, since some of my earliest memories of the Philippines were that of my dad, uncles, and friends drinking this & having a good time.
#Inktober#FAHM Edition, 09/31: Adobo Adobo is a traditional Philippine dish. It's prepared with white vinegar, soy sauce, garlic, peppercorns, & bay leaves, to create a marinade. The meat (chicken or pork) is marinated in this mixture overnight and cooked through.
